There's no denying it. The world is currently grappling with a severe plastic problem. As statistics now stand, 11 million tons of plastic make their way into our oceans each year. If current trends continue, it’s predicted that by 2050, plastic will outweigh fish in our oceans – and 12 billion metric tons of it will sit in landfills. And guess who plays a significant contributing role to this waste problem? That’s right.

The beauty industry. It produces over 120 billion units of packaging every year, which is often made up of complex lids, multi-layered boxes, and cellophane – much of which is non-recyclable (which means they end up in landfills and oceans). To that end, many beauty companies are increasingly pushing out “recyclable” packaging. But here’s what they don’t tell you: not all “recyclable” packaging is indeed, well, recyclable.
Sustainability guides everything we do here at Terrakai Skin. It’s our top priority through every step of production: from formula ideation to raw ingredient sourcing, from manufacturing practices to packaging choices – and beyond. Learn how we live and breathe social and environmental sustainability below.
What is Terrakai Skin doing differently in terms of packaging?
White-colored packaging: As sexy and aesthetically pleasing as dark-colored packaging is, here at Terrakai Skin, Earth’s health is a priority for us. Therefore, to increase the chances of our packaging being successfully recycled at processing plants, we opt for white – always.

Post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastics: For those unaware, PCR is a material made from the items that consumers recycle every day, including aluminium, cardboard boxes, paper, and plastic bottles. Terrakai Skin is actively reducing our usage of virgin plastic (i.e., plastic resin that's been newly created without any recycled materials). Better still, we currently have a product that's packaged with PCR.

No plastic “fillers”: When it comes to product packaging, it’s not just the bottle itself that contributes to our footprint. It’s also the plastic spatulas and lid inserts – which is why we’ve chosen to exclude all those in our product packaging. More good news: our shipper boxes are also free from plastic!

Soy-based ink: We avoid using “traditional” inks at all costs. Instead, we’ve partnered with one of the highest Eco-accredited printers in Australia to ensure that all our printing needs (from ingredient labeling to inserts to product boxes) are done with soy ink. In addition to being renewable, soy ink is also biodegradable and much easier to remove during the recycling process.

    No animal testing
Terrakai Skin will never test our finished products on animals.
There are 2 reasons we steer clear of animal testing:

The first – and most obvious – being that the practice is downright cruel. For your reference, here's what typically happens when beauty companies test their skincare products for safety on animals. Testers first shave off the animal's fur (it could be a rabbit, mice, guinea pig, or rat), then rub chemicals onto the bare skin without any pain relief.

Of course, this is fine if the skin care product were safe and didn't lead to any adverse reactions. But what if it did? Just imagine the amount of pain and suffering an animal needs to go through in the name of safety testing. The animals are also killed at the end of tests – often by asphyxiation, neck-breaking, or decapitation. And once again: there's no pain relief. As we said, downright cruel.

The second reason Terrakai Skin keeps animal testing out of our business practices? The practice is not even necessary.
The truth is that there are already thousands of available ingredients that have a history of safe use – companies can ensure safety by simply choosing to create products using these ingredients without the need for further testing.

There also now exists a slew of modern, non-animal testing methods (e.g., human cell-based tests and sophisticated computer models) that can more closely mimic how humans respond to formulations. Better still: they’re also often more efficient and cost-effective.

So, at Terrakai Skin, we choose to – first and foremost – formulate our products with proven safety. While unnecessary, we then validate our products’ safety profile by testing them on … well, ourselves (i.e., the Terrakai Skin). There are no animals involved. That’s a promise.

    What we’re working toward
    PCR plastic packaging
All our packaging (thanks to their color) is designed for circularity. But we recognize that they're still made from “virgin” plastic. That’s why we’re looking to move toward PCR plastic across all ranges and products here at Terrakai Skin. Using PCR removes plastic items from the waste stream – and gives them another life. But perhaps most importantly, this move allows us to drastically cut down the amount of “virgin” plastic generated daily.

We also genuinely believe that recycled, recyclable, and biodegradable packaging is just the beginning of what we can do. That’s why we’re looking forward to investing our effort into testing alternative packaging solutions, including bioplastics and mycelium-based packing materials, that will care for the planet without sacrificing the efficacy, safety, or stability of our products.

    Carbon neutrality
Terrakai Skin aims to achieve carbon neutrality (i.e., balancing out the total amount of our carbon emissions) – with our carbon offset program slated to begin in 2022.

Partner and supplier code of conduct
While Terrakai Skin products feature a large percentage of Australian botanicals, they're also formulated with potent, natural ingredients sourced worldwide. So, we recognize that our impact extends beyond our operations – across all supply chain touchpoints. That’s why we’re drafting up a “Terrakai Skin Code of Conduct”, which sets our expectations for environmental and social impact.

Compliance with this code will be a requirement of working with Terrakai Skin. Doing this ensures that all our suppliers and partners operate with the same values we do, with the underlying vision that skin wellness shouldn’t risk health or hurt the planet.
